CURATORIAL WALKTHROUGH: BAHIA REVERB @ A+P

Bia Gayotto is a contemporary multimedia artist, independent curator and writer who lives/works in The Sea Ranch and Los Angeles, California. Her interdisciplinary practice includes photography, video installations, and books, and combines elements of documentation, fieldwork, performance and collaboration. Over the years she has been developing “place-based” projects to examine ideas of connectivity through the relationships among people and their environment.

Gayotto obtained an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1996, and her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Orange County Museum of Art; LA Freewaves; Gendai Gallery, Toronto; Asian Pacific American Institute, New York; The Breeder Project, Athens; and Museum of Contemporary Art, São Paulo, among others.

She has received numerous grants and awards including the City of Los Angeles (C.O.L.A) Fellowship, Center for Cultural Innovation’s Investing in Artists and Artists’ Resource for Completion grants, and several Individual Artist grants from the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division. Since 2008 she has been developing place-based projects that result from artistic residencies worldwide including the Banff Centre, Canada; “Threewalls” in Chicago (IL); Lucas Fellowship at Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga (CA); AIR Taipei, Taiwan and Sacatar Fellowship, Brazil.

Gayotto’s curatorial practice is an extension of her own artistic research, including exhibitions “Between Two Worlds” at the Fine Arts Gallery, Cal State University, Los Angeles (2015); “PlaceBound” at Nan Rae Gallery, Woodbury University (2016); “Somewhere in Between” at Kellog Gallery, Cal Poly Pomona (2018-19), “Latitude 33˙56¨” at the Los Angeles International Airport (2019-20) and “Bahia Reverb:Artists and Place” at Art+Practice in partnership with the California African American Museum (CAAM).
